Ways To Get Involved with the COMMUNITY
CASA: Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of McKean County train community
volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the
foster care system in McKean County. The volunteers come from all walks of life. After
completing 30 hours of pre-service curriculum developed by National CASA/GAL, the
volunteers are sworn into the Court of Common Pleas as a Court Appointed Special
Advocate. The advocacy provided by the CASA includes interviewing parties involved in
the case to gain more knowledge about the child’s circumstances. The findings from
this contact are then compiled in a court report that is given to the presiding Judge of
the case to aid in making decisions in the best interest of the child. In addition, CASA
volunteers have a close partnership with the county’s single contracted Guardian Ad
Litem to ensure expedience in the provision of services, safety, and permanency.
Children with CASA volunteers are more likely to excel in school, find permanency
quicker, spend less time in foster care, and over 50% do not return to CYS care.
If you are interested in becoming a CASA volunteer, you can call the program at 814-
568-2170; email casa@mckeancountypa.gov; or visit the website at www.casamckean.org.

Meals on Wheels: Bradford Regional Medical Center Meals on Wheels provides nutritious hot meals for homebound clients five days per week, with an alternate menu option available. Weekend meals are available upon request. Volunteers deliver meals directly to clients' homes. Clients, whose mobility is temporarily or permanently diminished so that shopping for food and/or preparing meals is difficult, can be referred to the program through a healthcare provider, family member or through a self-referral. Stacy Shotts-Williams, Bradford Hospital Foundation Executive Director, oversees the program for the hospital. Sue Conner, Meals on Wheels project coordinator, runs the day-to-day operations of the program. For more information on the program, or to become a volunteer, call (814) 362-8288.
